The unique 1921 Morgan silver dollar
Morgan silver dollars are the most popular and widely collected of all U.S. silver coins. Minted from 1878 to 1904, and again in 1921, these classic silver dollars served as the backbone of daily commerce, both nationally and internationally, for decades. Today, Morgan silver dollars are avidly sought by worldwide for their high silver content, superb minting, and excellent leverage to the silver market.
The 1921 Morgan dollar is perhaps the most unusual issue in the entire series. After 1904, with national silver bullion supplies all but exhausted, the government suspended coinage of silver dollars altogether. In 1918, under the Pittman Act, more than 270 million silver dollars were melted down for bullion. By 1921, with the U.S. economy booming after World War One, the need for silver dollars became acute so the government resumed production for less than a full year with a few minor refinements, until the newly-authorized Peace dollar design was rolled out in late 1921. Because of its orphaned striking after a long hiatus, the 1921 Morgan dollar could be considered a one-year type coin unto itself.
True scarcity, low price, excellent value
Despite high mintage numbers, relatively few 1921 Morgan silver dollars survive today in Brilliant Uncirculated (BU) mint condition. Most were used heavily as spending money during the Roaring ‘20s. In fact, we see far fewer BU 1921 Morgan dollars in on the national market than BU Peace dollars, yet they're trading today now for almost the same price, making them a superior value with very good long-term investment potential.
Today, 1921 Morgan dollars in Brilliant Uncirculated condition are one of the smartest ways to invest in bulk silver. They offer true scarcity with greater leverage to the silver price than silver bullion for very little additional cost, and are far less expensive than earlier BU Morgan dollars, making them an excellent value.
Key Benefits
• Better than bullion. Combines low prices and relatively low risk with stronger upside potential than bullion becuase of scarcity and numismatic value. • True scarcity, low cost. 1921 Morgan silver dollars survive in extremely limited numbers, and are far scarcer than Peace dollars for similar cost. This true scarcity can mean extra leverage to a rising silver price. • Private, liquid, and secure. Unlike most bullion coins, 1921 Morgans are exempt from broker reporting and government confiscation due to their status as scarce collectible coins. Plus, they offer instant worldwide liquidity.
