PCGS estimates approximately 1,750 pcs 1834 Classic Head Half Eagles survive in total (all grades) with fewer than 300 coins in Mint State condition.

Our specimen has strong technical-merit and eye-appeal, with booming luster and no contact marks of note, elusive qualities for this series. This coin typically has strike-weakness in the stars and higher areas of the hair, but our specimen is fully-struck with only mild weakness noted in the hair above the ear. The coin has deep olive-gold fields with a bright yellow-gold central device.

MS64 specimens of this coin more than double in price, jumping to $25-$28K, depending on the coin. MS63 specimens have had a very steady price over the last decade, trading in a range between $9.5K to $12K, with a handful of exceptional specimens trading slightly higher when the market was more active.

NOTE: By 1834, the price of gold in a Half Eagle exceeded its face value, so the size and weight was reduced to encourage circulation over melting and export.
