American Gold Exchange is proud to carry the new 1-ounce American Buffalo gold bullion coin, produced by the U.S. Mint in 24-karat gold.

American Buffalo gold coins are the first .9999 fine 24-karat gold coins ever struck by the U. S. Mint. (American Eagle gold coins are .9167 fine, alloyed with small amounts of copper and silver.) Bearing a denomination of $50, they are intended as a convenient way to own and invest in pure, 24-karat gold in the form of legal tender coins whose content and purity are guaranteed by the United States Government.

Unlike many dealers, AGE charges no additional premium for American Buffaloes. We’re selling these exciting new coins for the same low price as 1-ounce American Eagles. There is no need to pay more!

Classic buffalo nickel design

The new American Buffalo gold coin is modeled on the beloved buffalo nickel, first issued in 1913 and still one of America's most popular coins. Although substantially larger in size and weight, it features the same original designs as the fabled nickel, created by noted American sculptor James Earle Fraser (once a student of Augustus Saint-Gaudens) to showcase the beauty and history of the American West. The obverse depicts the classic profile of a Native American chief; the reverse displays the revered image of the American bison.

According to the U.S. Mint, the Native American depiction on the obverse is thought to be a composite of three American Indians who modeled for Fraser as he sculpted the coin. Two of the three, Chief Iron Tail of the Lakota Sioux and Chief Two Moons of the Cheyenne, were named by Fraser before his death. No satisfactory documentation has been found identifying the third individual, however, whose name was forgotten by Fraser. The bison on the coin’s reverse is believed to be modeled after Black Diamond, a popular attraction at the New York Zoological Gardens at the time.

The buffalo nickel was introduced in 1913 with two distinct varieties, the first showing the bison on a mound and the second with the base redesigned to a thinner, straight line. American Buffalo gold coins bear the original Fraser Type I design.

Benefits of American Buffalo gold coins

Gold content guaranteed by the U.S. — American Buffaloes are the only 24-karat bullion gold coins guaranteed as to weight and gold content by the U.S. government.

Minted in 24-karat gold — Unlike American Eagle gold coins, which are minted in 91.67% pure gold alloyed with a small amount of silver and copper, American Buffaloes are minted in 24-karat, 99.99% pure gold with a weight of one ounce.

Private and non-reportable — Unlike many other gold bullion coins, American Buffaloes are non-reportable the IRS by brokers. They offer complete financial privacy and the security of the world’s oldest and safest financial asset. Other modern issue world bullion coins like Canadian Gold Maple Leafs, South African Gold Kruggerrands, Austrian Gold Philharmonics, and Chinese Gold Pandas are reportable to the IRS when you sell them to gold dealers in increments of 25 ounces or more. American Buffaloes are exempt from this reporting requirement.

Eligible for Individual Retirement Accounts — Unlike other gold bullion coins (but like American Gold Eagles), American Buffaloes are eligible to fund IRAs. In order to include American Eagles or Buffaloes in your IRA portfolio you must have an independent custodian hold your gold for you. American Gold Exchange works closely with several suitable IRA custodians. Please call 1-800-613-9323 or email info@amergold.com for details.

Easy to store and transport — American Buffaloes are pre-packaged by the U.S. Mint in transparent plastic sheets for protection. They are compact, convenient, and easy to store or transport.

Perfect mint quality — American Buffalo gold coins are taken directly from the minting press and sealed in protective plastic sheets. Their quality remains virtually perfect, like the day they were minted.

Better than bars and ingots — We recommend gold bullion coins like American Buffaloes over gold bars and ingots because they’re far easier to sell, store, and transport, and do not incur the additional costs of assaying when it is time for you to sell. With the advent of government-issue bullion coins in the last 20 years, most gold bar manufacturers have been put out of business.

Instant liquidity — American Buffalo gold coins are saleable at gold market value almost anywhere in the world and anytime. They are backed by the U.S. government for purity and weight.

How to order American Buffalo gold bullion coins

  1. Please call 1-800-613-9323 to confirm prices and avalability, and to place an order.

  2. Our bullion coins are priced in direct relation to the market price of the metals. Just as stock prices change moment to moment, our bullion prices can fluctuate on a daily or even hourly basis. This way, you never pay more than the going market price plus a small premium for minting and distribution. Remember, the U.S. Mint doesn’t make these coins for free, and we allow ourselves a very modest profit, usually only several dollars per ounce above our replacement cost.

  3. Just like buying stocks, when you place an order for bullion we lock you in at the price at that moment. We give you an order confirmation number, which guarantees your price. If the market price goes up, you pay no more.

  4. You send payment in the form of personal check, cashiers check, money order, or bank transfer. We age personal checks, cashiers checks, and money orders for 10 days before shipping your order. Bank transfers usually ship within 48 hours. You’re price is guaranteed. We do not accept credit cards for gold bullion purchases. The fee charged by the credit card companies typically exceeds the small margin we earn on bullion.

  5. We ship your order by registered, insured U.S. mail. We’ve found this to be the safest, most secure, and most economical method available. Registered mail travels under lock and key within the U.S. Postal System, separate from the regular mail, and is signed for every step of the way. You must sign for the package when it is delivered to you. If you are not available to sign, don’t worry. The postman will not leave it lying around like UPS or Fed Ex might. He will leave you a delivery notification that you can use to claim your package at your local Post Office.
