$5 Indian gold coins, AU Obverse $5 Indian gold coins, AU Reverse

Raw (uncertified) $5 Indian gold coins in Almost Uncirculated (AU) condition are a popular substitute for gold bullion, and for good reason. Minted early last century and containing nearly a quarter-ounce of pure gold, these classic U.S. coins are in very limited supply yet they're trading today for barely more than their melt value. In our opinion, they're a best buy in bulk gold.

Along with their $2.50 brethren, $5 Indians are unique because they feature an incuse design, meaning their images and inscriptions are actually cut into the coin surface. All other U.S. coins are struck in bas-relief, meaning their designs are raised slightly above the surface fields.

Better than bullion

Minted from 1908 to 1916, and again in 1929, $5 Indians were produced by the millions but almost all were heavily used as currency or melted down. This fundamental scarcity can drive up premiums during periods of high demand. And unlike most forms of gold bullion, they are exempt from broker reporting requirements, making them truly private. In our opinion, they're better than bullion for bulk gold buyers.

Key Benefits

Extremely low premiums. These classic, scarce U.S. coins are trading at extremely small premiums over their gold value today, making them an outstanding bargain.
True scarcity. Precious few remain in AU condition. This true scarcity can mean higher premiums during periods of increased demand.
Private, liquid, and secure. As collectible coins, they are exempt from broker reporting requirements, making them truly private.
