Sweden 20 kroner Oscar II gold coins in Brilliant Uncirculated (BU) condition are exceptionally scarce, yet they're trading today for little more than bullion, making them an outstanding value. They offer all the benefits of gold bullion plus extra benefits like limited supply, collector demand, complete financial privacy, and extra premium potential because of scarcity.
Slightly larger than British Sovereigns but far scarcer, they feature Oscar II, who was King of Sweden from 1872 until his death in 1907 and King of Norway from 1872 until 1905. Renowned for his intelligence and learning, he was an accomplished mathematician, musician, historian, and poet. He was appointed Knight of the Order of the Golden Fleece in Spain and Knight of the Order of the Garter in England.
Exceptional scarcity and value
BU Oscars are much scarcer than most of the European gold coins we trade in bulk. Only around 3.4 million coins were produced in total over some 22 mintage years, and precious few have survived in gorgeous BU condition. French 20 franc Angels, by contrast, had a mintage surpassing 100 million. Two mintage types exist. The first, minted from 1877 to 1899, depicts a young Oscar II (not shown); the second, minted from 1900 to 1902, depicts a mature Oscar II.
Unlike most forms of gold bullion, these coins are exempt from broker reporting requirements. In our opinion, they're better than bullion for bulk gold buyers.
• Exceptional scarcity. Only around 3.4 million were minted, and most have been lost, melted down, or heavily worn in circulation. This exceptional scarcity can result in higher premiums during periods of peak demand.
• Better than bullion. All the benefits of gold bullion plus extra benefits like limited supply, collector demand, financial privacy, and extra premium potential because of scarcity.
• Private, liquid, secure. Unlike most forms of gold bullion, they are exempt from broker reporting requirements.
