This 1834-P Classic Head Quarter Eagle is a near miss Gem quality coin. We bought it from a dealer at the Long Beach coin show who paid $11,000 thinking the coin would certainly grade MS65. While this has not happened yet, the coin remains a candidate for the MS65 designation. It is that nice. This specimen is extremely well struck in gorgeous yellow gold color. We saw two other specimens on the Long Beach bourse floor, both of which were inferior to this specimen, and would trade for more than we are asking for this stunning coin. For the entire Classic Head Quarter Eagle series from 1834 – 1839 PCGS has certified a total of just 69 coins in MS64 condition for all dates, with just 16 grading higher. The 1834 date is the “common” date for the series with a total of 37 graded MS64 by PCGS and 8 higher. This is probably one of the nicest of those 37 Mint State 64 graded coins based on our experience.
