This is the ex Bass coin and was the best Type 2 Harry Bass owned. David Akers saw it at the show and said it's the best Type 2 he's ever seen. It was auctioned by Superior at the 1975 ANA and there too it was noted as the finest those good folks had ever seen. I concur whole-heartedly. Fully struck, and I do mean FULLY struck with luster you just never see on Type 2's. At the show we held it side by side with an NGC 66 and there was simply no comparison, this coin blew the 66 away. Yes, it is on the expensive side for an MS65 but when every competent numismatist who’s seen it calls it the best he's ever seen you've got to expect it's worth a small premium. I have never seen a Type 2 gold dollar that can hold a candle to this coin, regardless of grade. The following was written by noted numismatic author David Akers. I carefully examined the 1855 Type Two Gold Dollar you showed me at the recent ANA convention in Atlanta. It is an exceptional example of this popular type coin. The MS65 grade designated by PCGS is very conservative and, in my opinion, the coin is at the high end of the 65 grade range. Of particular note and importance are the coin's very sharp strike and outstanding natural color and luster. This specimen is also highly desirable because it has a strong, full date, something rarely seen on a 1855 Gold Dollar. Based on my experience, it would be exceedingly difficult, if not impossible, to find a more or evenly comparable aesthetic MS65 1855 Gold Dollar than the example discussed here. |
