This is an opportunity to own one of the finest available 1857-O $20 Double Eagle specimens on the market today. With only 30,000 struck, the 1857 New Orleans Mint $20 Double Eagle is one of the rarer New Orleans dates. Today PCGS and NGC combined have graded a total of 116 coins in all grades for this mint and year; merely 11 coins have been graded AU58, and only 2 are known in Mint State. We believe, however, that number of AU58 specimens has been overstated due to a few resubmissions to the grading services. Rather than 11, we believe the actual number of coins in AU58 is probably 6 or 7. The only reason this particular coin is available today is because its owner has recently upgraded to the finest know PCGS graded MS63 example (which sold at auction for $97,750!). So as good fortune would have it (his and yours), another lucky collector has the unusual opportunity to acquire one of the finest examples of this rare issue at a very reasonable price.
