This pre-Civil War era U.S. $20 Liberty is exceptionally nice for the grade, with outstanding eye appeal and an exceptionally fine strike. The devices on both the obverse and revers are unusually crisp. Most noticeable is the strong detail in all of Miss Liberty's hair on the obverse. Almost never do we see a Type 1 $20 Liberty with such full delineation of the hair details! The reverse matches the obverse in strike quality. The color is a lovely yellow gold, with slight orange peel toning on the obverse, and the luster is radiant and full. The technical merit is similarly outstanding. One faint bag mark is apparent in front of Miss Liberty's mouth in the obverse field, and two minor ticks lie in her hair above the crown. On the reverse a small, two to three denticle type bagmark is apparent just to the left of the T in the word TWENTY. A closer look shows that the coin has some very faint interruptions in the frost on the obverse on Miss Liberty's cheek and in the field to the left of her face. But these ever-so-slight beaks in the luster do not detract at all from the overall beauty of this coin. This particular coin is one of the nicest Type 1 $20 Liberties we've ever seen in MS63 condition, and certainly the nicest for this particular date. PCGS has certified just four coins in MS63 condition, with two MS64 coins and one MS65 coin, none higher. Until the Brother Jonathan and S.S. Central America hoards came to market there were less than 100 total coins graded MS63 by PCGS for the entire Type 1 $20 Liberty gold coin series. This is a phenomenal coin for either the investor or the advanced collector. |
